New Franklin Township School Photos Index

GSMC just scanned and added to the FREE DATABASES section of our website an extensive alphabetical index to school group photos: 4,653 Names

The original photos were collected and organized by Velma Ruede.
The alpha index was created by Marlena Linne. This is a snip of the format.

The collected photos are in two large ring binders in the collection of the Franklin Township Historical Society. If researchers find their family members in the Index, they can visit the FTHS and see the original photos.

IPS School #21 Museum Relocating

 Woodside Methodist Church Closing;

IPS School #21 Museum Moving

It is with great sadness we must announce that district will be closing Woodside United Methodist Church in June of this year.

This necessitated finding a new home for our memorabilia museum collection.   Joe Whitsett has stepped forward and is graciously providing room in the school building to display it for us, and as always, welcomes us to hold our reunions there.

Arrangements for the move and actual display are in the works and we will let you know when that is to occur.

We are in hopes that some of the alumni will volunteer to helps us pack, move and set up the museum in its new location when that time comes and along with the use of trucks, if any of you have one and are willing to help.

We will hold an open house at the church so friends and members of the church along with alumni can visit one more time before the move.  The open house will be on a Sunday with time and date to be announced.

This will change our reunion plans but will not interfere with our reunion which will be held on 30th, the last Saturday in July. We will announce time and locations when new plans have been finalized.

We wish the congregation well....and thank them profusely for their friendship, generosity and for hosting our reunions over these many years.

It has been 16 years since we established the museum at Woodside, and while there have been many class reunions over the years, it was 23 years ago when we held our first "All Class Reunion".

Isn't it interesting...we are returning home, so to speak. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

"Who Do You Think You Are" Returns

“Who Do You Think You Are”

Returns In July!

Who Do You Think You Are? a genealogy series executive produced by Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky, will premiere Sunday, July 10 — 10 years and two months after it last aired on NBC. The show, which tracks celebrities’ ancestry, ran for three seasons on the network before moving to TLC in 2013. It ran for several more seasons there, most recently in December 2018.

There’s also been a sizable gap between when NBC announced it had reclaimed Who Do You Think You Are? — which happened in May 2019 — and the show’s premiere. The show follows stars who are tracing their family history with the help of historians, genealogists, and other experts.

Subjects for the season are Allison Janney, Zachary Levi, Nick Offerman, Billy Porter, Zachary Quinto and Bradley Whitford.

State Library Hosts 1950 Census Workshop

Our only quibble is that it is being held on May 20, almost 2 months after the census release.

'Swinging into the 1950s!'

Upcoming talk on the 1950 census

On Friday, May 20, the Indiana State Library is hosting a free one-day library conference, Government Information Day 2022. One of this year’s conference sessions is a talk by Indiana State Library Genealogy Division supervisor Jamie Dunn and State Data Center librarian Katie Springer titled “Swinging into the 1950s! NARA Releases the 1950 Census.” This 55-minute presentation - including a Q&A - will explain all the unique features detailed in the release of 1950 U.S. census.

In April, the National Archives will release the 1950 census records to the public, 72 years after census day. Information found within the census traditionally has served as a valuable resource for genealogists. Dunn and Springer will provide a clear overview of what is and what is not included in census, and how genealogists can utilize this information in their own research. Their program will aid librarians who interact with genealogy patrons or have a personal interest in family history.

The talk will take place Friday, May 20 at 1:30 PM in the History Reference Room at the Indiana State Library. Click here to register to attend Government Information Day 2022. To learn more on the other sessions at GID22, please see the library’s page on the conference here.
