What's With Whisler Cemetery?

For at least the last 10 years or so, the Whisler Cemetery
on East Washington St. has been covered with brush and brambles
so thick you couldn't work your way into it.
Last week one of our resource folks noticed some cleanup was happening,
so we zipped right down and took this photo.
Is someone renovating the site? Who? Let's keep an eye out for more progress-YAY!

Search Union Chapel Burials

We have a cemetery readings book by Elizabeth Hague for Union Chapel Cemetery in Washington Township, but it is not searchable on our website cemetery module (11,000 names!)
But the Secretary for Union Chapel contacted us recently with a suggestion
that we link to their website, which IS searchable.
We have done that, so go to that cemetery on our site and use the link to find your folks.

Remembering Pike Cemetery Volunteers 1996

GSMC has been fortunate in having a great group of volunteers
ready and willing to do valuable genealogy work.
The below list of folks did cemetery readings, data entry,
and everything else to create our Pike Township Cemetery book in 1996.
Marion County researchers owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
Our current volunteers are following in wonderful footsteps!

Jenny Greene Tackles Memorial Park

Longtime GSMC member and very important Angel volunteer Jenny Greene

recently began an extensive Memorial Park burials project.

Some time ago Jenny was one of the GSMC volunteers who scanned
the burial cards of Memorial Park stored in the cemetery office (below)
Now Jenny is comparing those cards to the cemetery burial list on our website
and she will be correcting any errors or omissions.
Since Memorial Park has over 28,000 burials, Jenny has a big job ahead.
Marion County researchers should keep alert for these corrections.
Go, Jenny! Thanks a bunch!

Peter Hessong: Marion County Mystery

When we were working on the Washington Township cemetery files,
we ran across the entries below.
We did some research on "Peter Hessong--Revolutionary Soldier" but we came up blank,
Is this a mistake? Do we need to work more on him?
Does anyone out there in digital land have any info?
If so, give us a buzz, so we can honor him. Thanks.

Marion County Cemetery Page Format

This is the standard format that we plan for all of the cemetery pages on our website.
Researchers should read the background information for that site
and then click on the "View Cemetery Records" for all the burials we have for that location.
We are beginning with Washington Township; then doing Lawrence and Pike.
We will notify our Members first when each township is completed.

Enter Cemetery Data At Home!

As you can see from the flyer below, GSMC members and other volunteers
did a large project in 1996-97 by reading all the cemetery headstones in
Pike and Decatur Townships.
We produced the results in two publications that we sold to support our Society.
After selling them for a good number of years, we recently decided to add the data  to our
online cemetery module so these townships can be searched along with the other data we have.
Here's where you come in.
This is a major data entry job, so we need several more volunteers to do it.
The nice part is that you can do the data entry at your home at your convenience.
We will train you and provide you with what material you want to do.

Contact us at our society email and we will work out the details.
Marion County researchers will thank you very much!!

Our current cemetery total is 220,830 burials

--help make it bigger!!

Random Documents Department

Sometimes it seems like we lead the country in random documents.
This death certificate turned up in a pile of paperwork
and we have no idea who it belongs to or why we have it.
Anyone have any ideas? Pearl was born in Indianapolis.

Don't Forget Our Printed Cemetery Documents

As we improve, enhance, and emphasize our website Cemetery Module in 2024,
don't overlook our printed books and booklets.
We have at least one for each of the 120+ burial sites in Marion County,
and they all contain material not found online.

Angel Volunteer Janet Stroebel

We interrupted her data entry session last Wednesday
to get a photo op with Janet Stroebel.
Janet was appointed in December as a Marion County Genealogy Angel.
She is one of our most versatile volunteers and did a lot of oversize scanning
in 2023 for our Warren Township School newspapers.

Visiting From Out Of The Area?

If you are one of those researchers coming to our library for some distance away,
there are several restaurants less that a mile east on Washington St./Rt. 40.
Some of our folks like to get breakfast or lunch at Blueberry Hill,
but there is a good variety in the area.
