Steve Barnett Profiles Civil War Families

Marion County Historian Steve Barnett (and GSMC Director) wrote a great article about our new lineage society, the Civil War Families of Marion County. The article appears in the July 22 issue of the Weekly View newspaper. We have the full article in our library [open Wednesday 11-3] or the paper is still around in some of your favorite pick up sites. Thanks, Steve!

Museum Exhibits At Hancock County

Advanced registration is required and once registered, participants will receive the link through email to join the program online.

Our smaller museum creates many exhibits that are in a small scale for themed cases. Each season we try to feature one of our collections for the public. This is a process that we are highlighting in a video to be shown during this webinar. You will be introduced to our facilities see an exhibit idea being born, and watch us go through the steps to create a featured exhibit.

This video was made possible by a grant from the Hancock County Tourism Commission. We thank them for letting us promote our mission.

A Most Successful Conference

GSMC wrapped up the two-day Midwestern Roots Conference this afternoon
and all considered the event a winner.
Volunteers Janet Mobley, Kim Smith, Barbara Cline-Hutchison, Ron Darrah,
and Barry Levitt all contributed to the successful Society booth.
The group mixed and matched shifts and helped Conference attendees
with query answers and advice.
GSMC sold a number of books and CD's and handed out numerous schedules and fact sheets.
Ours was the only Indiana County Society booth in the vendor hall,
and our outreach activity was noticed and appreciated.

Just drive on East 21st to the east side of the hotel, park, and enter under the roofed drive-thru.
There are many other vendors to browse through, too. See you there!!

GSMC President Barbara Cline-Hutchison welcomes one and all to the GSMC booth!

Hubbard Resources Available

A library visitor recently donated several ring binders to GSMC
of the Hubbard family of Washington Township.
Below is a sample of dozens of original photos and personal documents in two binders
of Terri Hubbard, her parents Thomas E. Hubbard and Beryldean Groom Hubbard,
and her brother Thomas E., Jr.
Additional binders have other ancestral lines, many of them from Peoria and Danville, Illinois,
We would like to place these items with other family members interested in genealogy.
If this is you, contact us and we will work with you to get this done.

Perry Township Resources Growing Fast

Last month GSMC President Barbara Cline-Hutchinson reached out to the Perry Township/Southport Historical Society about GSMC digitizing some of their documents.
Their President Barry Browning (at left below with GSMC librarian Ron Darrah)
responded with a good number of items, most of which are finished
and on the FREE section of the GSMC website now.
We hope to continue with this township and to add additional townships in coming days.
Do you have any ideas?

Civil War Families of Marion County

Civil War Families of Marion County Society Starts Now

In honor of the many Marion County residents who served in the Union army and navy during the Civil War, the Genealogical Society of Marion County, officially establishes the

Civil War Families of Marion County

 July 4, 2022.

The CWFMC is designed to both honor the Union veteran and their families, but also  to offer a research challenge to GSMC genealogists.
To qualify for the Civil War Families Society, GSMC members must prove a direct lineage line back to a resident of Marion County who joined the Union Army or Navy during the Civil War period, April 12, 1861 to April 9, 1865.
Interested applicants should print the Application Form (See the link above) and follow the indicated directions. The CWFMC uses a lineage style that is very similar to SAR, DAR, Indiana Pioneers, or Society of 1812 applications, all of which can be used as proof.
The initial submission period ends on December 1, 2022, and all applications should be postmarked by that deadline. Visit the GSMC website at www.genealogyindy.org for further
guidance and feel free to email with questions. The first Induction Class will be specially honored at the GSMC monthly meeting in December 2022.

Are you up to the challenge???

Recover Lost IPS Elementary Schools

The Indianapolis Public Schools have had 114 elementary schools since the 1850's.
Try finding any of the students who attended those buildings!
GSMC is on a quest to find any and all of those kids--and you can help.
Do you have any class photos, promotion programs, newsletters, yearbooks,
or any other documents that show students of any of those 114 schools?

We want to scan those items and get them online for researchers.
Contact us for our "Scan and Return" project.
Indianapolis genealogists will be forever grateful!
