GSMC Member Volunteer Amy Booher

When we featured our volunteers on October 8th, Amy was at her regular job,
but we definitely did not want to overlook her.
Amy has done several digitizing projects and she holds her latest,
a scanned list of Marion County Revolutionary Soldiers (soon to be a new GSMC project!).
Here's a bouquet of roses to Amy and all her member volunteer companions.

Amazing Slave Photo Collection

These images have to be the rarest photographs in American history.
Follow this link and take a look,
then read about the court case.

Immigration Session A Big Hit

Yesterday we had a good workshop session on immigration
and the Castle Garden station in New York harbor.
We had eight attendees in person and reportedly 40 on Zoom.
Our speaker Carolyn Niemantsverdreit gave an informative talk
with resources and lots of contemporary photos.
[Her main problem was teaching us how to pronounce her name!]

Still Time For First Families Entry

You still have time to honor your Marion County First Families.
Select the "MC Lineage Societies" tab on our home page
and follow the procedures.
You can also come in on Wednesdays
or make an appointment for some other day.
Deadline is December 1st, so don't dawdle!

Take a look at our Marion County Civil War society, too.

Preserving All Indianapolis History

If you don't subscribe to the Indianapolis Star,
you should find a copy from October 3rd, and read this story.
Too much history everywhere is only written by a small group of the power brokers;
genealogists and historians should seek out the full story and make it part of the record.

Is IPS A Waste of Time?

If you want to contact the Indianapolis Public Schools about something,
you have to use the "Let's Talk" feature of their website.
I did that back in August 22 with a request to scan
some records from their closed elementary schools.
As of today, I have not heard a peep from IPS.
The sad part is that I don't really have much hope of getting a reply, as
GSMC has tried a number of times to get a real person at our public school district.
I suspect deep down that they only reply to
high level politicians or very rich potential donors.
I also suspect deep down that the records they had are now in a landfill somewhere.
That's the really sad part.

America's Revolutionary War Private Navy

If you can't find your ancestor in George Washington's army troops,
try looking for them in the privateer lists.
Thousands of sailors manned these ships that captured
many British cargo vessels during the Revolution.
This book just added to our library is a reprint of the 1856 original.

If you are chasing an elusive German ancestor, you should treat yourself to this local event.
