Featuring Another Indy Angel

Sometimes it takes a while to connect with our awardees, but we get it done.
On Wednesday we were finally able to recognize Amy Booher
as our newest Marion County Genealogy Angel.
Amy has been a regular Wednesday volunteer in 2023.
On the 27th she finished burial entries on the Old Union Cemetery of Wayne Township
and then jumped right in working on the letter "P" funeral files.
GSMC is fortunate to have Angels like Amy!

Search 219,713 Marion County Burials

As we get ready for 2024,
we want to remind you that you can search our entire burials database at one time.
Go to the below screen in the Cemeteries tab
and enter your name(s) in the Search for Surname window.
It's FREE and it's growing daily as our volunteers keep on entering.

These names are primarily the older, more genealogy-focused burials in the county.
Most of the newer commercial sites are not included,
except for the Flanner and Buchanan locations. (We received some great data files!)
Enjoy the work of many GSMC volunteers over many years.
Contact us if you have questions.

Funeral Documents 2023 Progress

At the beginning of 2023 we had a group of Marion County funeral documents
from Flanner and Buchanan dating from 1904 to 1960.
They were in 31 alphabetical books (Photo 1)
Our Member Partners, after many hours of data entry this year,
made the books look like this (Photo 2)
The completed funeral documents are now in digital collections and are online on our website.
The original pages are in alphabetical boxes in the library. (Photo 3)
We have not totaled the letters up, but we do know that just the "T" names are 1,140 pages.
[Now that's a lotta ancestors!]

We still need some volunteers to help finish up this project.
Do YOU have a little spare time??

Updating Revolutionary War Vets Book

We noticed that our Marion County Rev War notebook was in need of revising,
so Amy Booher scanned the printed original,
and Doug Scott did some major work to bring the pages into the 21st century.
We will be loading it online shortly on our Members Military section.
If anyone has documented files that will improve our pages, please let us know.
[Lots of missing burial locations!]
Thanks.

New Bulletin Board

As we move toward 2024 we're improving our library
with the addition of a nice new bulletin Board.
Keep a lookout for a lot of topical genealogy news and notes.
If you want to post something, contact a board member.

"Finding Your Roots" January 2, 8 pm

Well, finally, "Roots" is back! Can you believe it's Season 10 already?
Here in Indy we can watch it on WFYI Channel 20.
Those of you out in the uncivilized parts of the country will have to find a PBS station.
Good luck with that!

New Flanner And Buchanan Families Book

Bruce Buchanan recently donated this great book to our library.
A 2021 publication of the Indiana Historical Society, it's the story
of an Indianapolis family going back six generations.
Drop by our facility some Wednesday and take a look at some major Indy history.

Next Genealogy Angel

President Barbara Cline-Hutchinson presented
her Genealogy Angels certificate to Marlena Linne on Wednesday.
Marlena is our southeast Marion County specialist, and her work resulted
in Warren, Franklin, and Perry Townships moving to the top of the resources list.
Thanks, Marlena!

New Genealogy Angels--Hooray!

At our Holiday Meeting last Saturday
GSMC President Barbara Cline-Hutchinson (right) awarded
Genealogy Angels certificates to (L-R) Janet Mobley, Jenny Greene, and Doug Scott
for their strong support of Marion County genealogy.
All three contributed many hours of their time to developing new resources.
GSMC is fortunate to have such outstanding volunteers!

 Several other volunteers were awarded Genealogy Angels status;

we will feature them here as soon as we can run 'em down.

2024 Cemetery Module Upgrade Project

Introducing our GSMC 2024 Project!
We plan to revisit all 120-plus online burial locations in Marion County                and enhance them somehow.

We will add burials, improve existing entries, or add notes and directions.
[Our Cemetery Module has been on the back burner for several years,
as we worked on other material.]

If you want to participate or if you have some graves material,
please contact us or visit us at the library any Wednesday.
Thanks!!

Bruce Buchanan Visits GSMC

We had a VIP visit on Wednesday, as Bruce Buchanan of Flanner and Buchanan stopped in.
We talked over a lot of topics, including our library and some historic records accessions.
Our partnership with F&B has been very successful for genealogists,
as we just extended our lease on Tuesday for five more years with options.
Keep those records donations coming, folks; help keep our resources growing

Last Chance For City Directories!

We are phasing out the printed copies of the Indianapolis City Directories in our library.
These books are available digitally on numerous websites,
such as the IUPUI Library and the State Library.
They are also available on microfilm in our library, among others.
Starting Wednesday Dec. 13, we start recycling them.
If you want any for your collection, let us know and pick them up, otherwise sayonara.
