to help tell the story of the closed Hospital.
Have anything in a box in your closet or in the back of your memory?
Bring it out and add your connection to the historical record.

Greenlawn Revisited: Be Aware!

The below listed presentation needs to be on the schedule
of all Marion County genealogists and historians.
This bridge will go across White River right at the Diamond Chain site
and the site of the former Greenlawn Cemetery.
A follow-up to this project  is a massive soccer stadium also on the Greenlawn area.
How many hundreds of burials will be encountered during these construction projects?
Will the dirt movers handle all of this correctly?
Attend the public presentations and help keep the work in the right track.

We moved our comfortable chairs out to the program area

and created an individual study or small meeting area.

Much better for all!

Marion County Wants You!

The Genealogical Society of Marion County wants [and needs]
you to operate one of our digital scanners.
We have a pile of materials for researchers, and these folks are all over the country.
Our website is a major resource and can be even better with your help.
Remember, 99% of our material is only available on our site--not Ancestry, not FamilySearch,
--not My Heritage--you get the picture.
Contact us now! You'll be glad you did!

Any Family Work At IPL?

We just added this great Marion County resource to our library and our website.
Lot of local folks mentioned and some interesting history in 76 pages.
Barbara Cline-Hutchinson of our scanning team created the website file for your edification.
Thanks, Barb.

This book can be found in Members Database Set 2 under "1900's Business Records."

More Black History Found

History and genealogy are all around us; you just have to be alert.
If you had African ancestry in colonial Virginia,
wouldn't you like to find this article in the newspaper?
Another reminder to keep following all those unconventional locations.

Millers Donate Lilly Retirees Material

GSMC President Barbara Cline-Hutchinson (L) is pleased to receive
a great collection of Eli Lilly Corp. retiree lists and data for our library.
Julie and Willard Miller are two of our "Member Partners" for providing these items.
One of our volunteer scanners is working on the material right now
and it will soon be online at our site.
Kudos to Julie and Willard.

Have An Unused Bookshelf?

Our library collection continues to expand and our need for addition shelving grows also.
We could use 3-5 more shelf units, similar to the one below. We are flexible on size and color, but would appreciate no sawdust shelves. [Books are heavy!]
If you have one you will donate, we can arrange a pickup. We are a 501-C-3 organization, so we can give you a tax receipt. Thanks!

Honor Your Civil War Ancestor

Civil War Families of Marion County Society

In honor of the many Marion County residents who served in the Union army and navy during the Civil War,

the Genealogical Society of Marion County, officially established the

Civil War Families of Marion County on July 4, 2022.

The CWFMC is designed to both honor the Union veterans and their families, but also to offer a research challenge to GSMC genealogists.
To qualify for the Civil War Families Society, GSMC members must prove a direct lineage line back to a resident of Marion County who joined the Union Army or Navy during the Civil War period, April 12, 1861 to April 9, 1865.
Interested applicants should print the Application Form (See the link on our website) and follow the indicated directions. The CWFMC uses a lineage style that is very similar to SAR, DAR, Indiana Pioneers, or Society of 1812 applications, all of which can be used as proof.
The submission period ends on December 1 of each year, and all applications must be postmarked by that date. Visit the GSMC website at www.genealogyindy.org for further guidance and feel free to email with questions. Each Induction Class will be specially honored at the GSMC holiday meeting in December.

"Member Partner" Judy Jones Brought Photos

Our member Judy Jones, who we now consider one of our "Member Partners," recently brought in a large collection of family photos for us to digitize and put online.

Judy (Right) discusses the photos with GSMC President Barbara Cline Hutchinson

Looks like they're happy with the program so far!

Do you have any Marion County photos? Can we scan them?
