Wednesday Was Donation+ Day!

Our GSMC library day on Wednesday turned out to be unusual. First in the morning Janet Stroebel appeared with a nice full box of office supplies to bolster our stash (see photo one).

Then, about an hour later, Sharon Kennedy walked in followed by her hubby carrying another box of genealogy materials for us to peruse (see photo two).

Then, not long after that, a new friend Susan Nichoff appeared with a couple of bags containing more genealogy materials (see photo three).

In addition to these happenings, we had our three great volunteers Jenny, Amy, and Janet joining with officers Barb, Don, and Ron spending the day creating more great resources for Marion County researchers.
Our "Coffee and Conversation" Wednesday turned out great. It's always fun to gather and talk genealogy. Lastly, we had Judy Jones pop in to guarantee that conversation was not going to be a problem.
[Join us next Wednesday; you'll fit right in!]

Coffee & Conversation Wednesday

Join us on Wednesday from 11 to 3 for a little chitchat.
We provide the java (tea? other?) and we all furnish the conversation.
Tell us about your family--can we help with a few things?
Bring in some docs and photos to show.
See you there!

State Library Progress

This photo was taken earlier this week at the site of the new State Archives Building.
It resembles an IKEA project right now, with a lot of assembly required.
They seem to have provided a path for the canal joggers, but what about the summer concert folks?
That part looks a little iffy...

Lawrence Schools Mislay History

See the trunk at the bottom of this photo?
In the early 2000's there were 6 of these trunks stored in the old Lawrence Central HS building.
They contained dozens of ledgers recording schools data, like class registers, enumerations, teacher lists, and so forth.
We know this because GSMC volunteers inventoried them, and we copied some of the material for genealogists to use.
Then the Lawrence School system sold that building and moved all its contents somewhere
Last summer we had some free volunteer time, so we contacted them to see if we could
acquire them or scan them.
They agreed to give all the ledgers to us--Yay!--so we went to pick them up.
They had two trunks ready, so we took them to our library, processed the materials,
and  stocked them in our Lawrence Township section.
-------------------

Problem: They can't find the other four trunks!

The school system stored these ledgers for over 100 years, they had them in 2004, they gave us two of them, and that's it?
Don't you think they would all be stored together? Wouldn't they all be in the same building?
-----------------
Does anyone out there have a connection with the MSD of Lawrence Township?
We really want these unique historical artifacts. HELP! HELP!

EBay Sales Volunteer Needed

 GSMC needs to sell a good collection of duplicate and/or non-Marion County materials.

We can use the cash raised to help fund our website expenses.

If you have experience selling on EBay (or want to acquire some!), give us a call.

We can use your help.

You can work from home or from our library.

You create the sales entries; our library staff will package and ship the items.

Thanks much.

Cemetery Module Update

 We have completed the updates for Washington and Lawrence Townships.
GSMC volunteers have verified the burial lists, corrected many entries,
added newly found burials, and enhanced many entries, especially military burials.
We are now working on Pike and Wayne Townships.

As of today, we have 223,336 burials in our Cemetery Module,
all surname searchable from one screen.

V. B. Williams Farm Anyone?

We just discovered the Williams Farm Cemetery in Perry Twp.
In 1908 12 graves were moved to Crown Hill.
Our question is where was the V. B. Williams Farm?
Anyone know? Contact us please.

GSMC Volunteers = Data For Researchers

                        It's an easy equation to see, but it's not that easy to create.

 GSMC is gifted with a dedicated core of Member Partners dedicated to

 providing more genealogy information to our members and other researchers.

Wednesday was a good example:
Janet Stroebel finished the "P" surnames for our Funeral Home project;
Doug Scott turned in the burials list for New Augusta Cemetery in our Cemetery Module Project;
Jenny Greene completed data files for West Union and Floral Park Cemeteries;
Don Weber completed a large section of more Funeral Home Project pages;
and Marlena Linne gave us more scannable copy for our St. John Church files.

Marion County researchers are some lucky folks!!

American Legion Burials Project

We have a burials problem.
We have dozens of pages like this St. Joseph Cemetery excerpt.
They were evidently something the American Legion did at some time.
Our problem is the Indiana State Legion office doesn't know anything about it.
No who, what, when, etc.
So we are throwing it out to to our public brains and memories.
Give us a clue, guys!
