Indiana Legion Civil War Resource

The Indiana Legion was the reserve unit of the Union Army.
Every able-bodied man not in the regular Union Army was required to serve in the Legion.
Several unit rosters of Marion County units are scanned and on our GSMC website.
Many more rosters are in the Indiana State Archives.
You can prove your ancestor's Civil War military service using these rosters.
You can quality for the Civil War Families of Marion County using this resource.
Go For It!

You'll be glad you did!

Great Cerealine Program Last Saturday

Sharon Kennedy gave an outstanding report August 13th
of the west Indy area called Cerealine Town.
We had a full house of over a dozen attendees and a good time was had by all.

The crowd begins to gather in the GSMC Library.

Sharon Kennedy, flanked by GSMC officers Barbara Cline Hutchinson and Ron Darrah,
not only gave a great presentation
but also donated a collection of genealogy resources to the Society.
Thanks much, Sharon!

Some Black Delaware Farmers Survive 1890 Census

If you might have someone in this small 454-member group in Delaware,

you should check this out.

Lists of selected Delaware African-Americans whose names appeared on the 1890 census survived by a quirk of fate, and have been reproduced in National Archives Microfilm Publication M1919:

List of Selected African Americans from the 1890 and 1900 Federal Population Censuses of Delaware and Related Census Publications "Agriculture in the State of Delaware" (1901) and "Negroes in the United States" (1904) (1 roll).

In addition to the lists of selected African Americans from the 1890 and 1900 censuses, this microfilm publication also includes government publications useful to general Delaware and African American historical research.

[Thanks to Dick Eastman for this heads up.]

Indy Encyclopedia Updated

If you have used the hardbound Encyclopedia of Indianapolis that was published way back in the 1990's, you might be glad to know that it is now available digitally on the Indianapolis Public Library website AND it is being expanded and updated regularly. It's a great resource for Marion County.
