 African American Marriages In Marion County WPA Book, 1881-1885

                In this index, created by the Works Progress Administration in 1939, the column 4 heading is “Color.” This column is primarily left blank, except for these 21 marriages, when a “C” is added.

                We noticed this rare addition not long ago among thousands of marriages. Just out of curiosity, we checked several of these couples in the Ancestry.com Indiana Marriages Database. In no case did Ancestry identify these marriages as African American.

                In light of the time frame, we thought someone might appreciate this mention. Also, the Volume is listed as “1881-1885,” but all of the marriages are from 1885.
